CHARACTER
NAME: Henry Townshend
CANON: Silent Hill 4: The Room
CANON POINT: The end of the game before his final fight with Walter
BACKGROUND: https://silenthill.fandom.com/wiki/Henry_Townshend

SUITABILITY:

I think a game about surviving is a good place to put a survival horror game protagonist! Henry, while reserved, can be bold and resourceful when he has to be. During the events of SH4, he does battle with nightmarish creatures and carefully tends to his injured neighbor. Henry tries his best to do right by everyone around him and I think he would make a good ally for the other Pokemon in the bay. He's willing to cooperate and do hard (and scary) jobs. I also think giving him access to a support group would be very nice for him. Throughout his adventure, Henry has had to scrabble and scrounge with whatever he has at his disposal--knives, golf clubs, broken bottles, etc. Being a Pokemon that has natural abilities (not to mention flying!!) would certainly boost his confidence.

QUESTIONNAIRE:

Your character is on an exploration quest when they find an injured Pokemon in need of help. This Pokemon appears to be in distress and is quite dangerous, posing a risk to your character even if they mean well, and putting your quest mission at risk. What do they do? What are some possibilities of how they work with teammates to address this, or do they go at it alone?

If not specifically appointed as a leader, Henry will hang back and let other Pokemon decide what to do. He trusts that they know more about the injured Pokemon since they have been in this world longer than him. If he is out with a team of fellow newbies, he will suggest approaching the Pokemon as a group and trying to calm it down. He's gone it alone before and would rather not have to do that again any time soon. However, if the Pokemon he's with are smaller and weaker than he is, or even newer, Henry will step up and try to help the distressed Pokemon on his own. He has Sand Attack, which can help protect himself and his team from the injured Pokemon's thrashing--hopefully until it tires itself out and becomes easier to deal with.

In the event that the Pokemon makes itself completely uncooperative, Henry will opt for knocking it out and dragging it home. It's only an exploration mission after all. Chances are, he's just going through the motions of being on a mission to begin with. He's not the adventuring type. He would rather stay home.

Your character's worst enemy has recently appeared in game, and has joined the guild your character is part of. They both want to tackle the same quest, and your character's enemy suggests that they work together as a team to accomplish this goal. How does your character respond to this?

Meeting Walter in the world of Pokemon, especially within the same guild and quest, would result in an explosive encounter. Walter has herded Henry through deeper and deeper layers of a nightmare world to get him in just the right place to act as the final sacrifice in a dark ritual. Also he's being super weird about his neighbor. He can't forgive that--especially if he's made friends in the Pokemon world. He would want to protect them. While Walter may have lost the powers lent to him by the Otherworld, Henry would be well aware that he would have other powers to do evil with. Dumb animal fear takes over and Henry becomes a Walter-seeking missile. Dragon Claw Dragon Claw Dragon Claw Dragon Claw Dr--

The leader of your character's guild has just approached your character with an offer: they will provide your character with extra supplies, reputation points, and help them with any of their current struggles. In exchange, they ask for your character to do a favor for them that may harm the other guilds, and will not specify what the favor is in advance. It sounds shady, but it's the deal of a lifetime in your character's path to get back home, and refusing it may cause strife for your character within their current guild. What do they think of this offer? What do they ultimately decide to do?

Henry is instantly Huge Suspicious. He's already been used once to bring about destruction, he's not willing to be used again to hurt other Pokemon. He doesn't like the secrecy of not being told what is required of him. Henry will leave the guild entirely if he has to. No budging on this. He will also rat out the leader to the other guilds as he does it. He doesn't care if they may not believe him, he believes in doing what is right.

Due to shortages on supplies, the city is facing issues deciding where to cut corners during this rough time. Somehow, the responsibility has fallen on your character's shoulders, and they have to make a decision. If they send out an extra team of Pokemon, they will be able to gather more food, and through that, save the lives of dozens of starving Pokemon that were in dire need of nutrition. However, the only Pokemon available to scout for food are those working at the pokeclinic, and sending them out would mean certain death for at least two ill patients. What does your character decide to do? How do they feel about this choice, and how would they deal with the pushback that comes from either side?

Henry is dizzy with the responsibility. It's something he felt before, though on a smaller scale. In Silent Hill 4, he becomes tasked with stopping Walter from summoning a god that will destroy the whole world. He's literally just some guy. Multiple people have already died in front of him, so his emotions are very splintered. He's heartbroken for those who were harmed by Walter's monsters, but in the face of tragedy, he knows there will be losses. It's foolish to think something so terrible can be cleanly escaped. However, he will eventually lean in favor of sending the Pokemon out to get supplies, even if a few sick Pokemon may die. He knows that if he were one of those sick Pokemon, he would tell the others to go out to get help to save the larger number of Pokemon in need.

As for how he deals with the backlash, he will retreat into himself and carry the loss of lives and friends with the blank expression he's known for. He never asked for this to rest on his shoulders, but he knows he can't be mad at other Pokemon for losing trust in him. He also knows that no amount of good deeds will bring those Pokemon back, but oh does he try anyway. Give a Pokemon a complex.

POKEMON: I will admit that at first, Flygon was a bit of a random choice for Henry. I was going down a list of bipedal Pokemon and saw it. Flygon is a bit forgettable and not super useful on its own, but the more I thought about it, the more playing Henry as a Flygon appealed to me. He would gain the ability to fly--something he could throw himself into to escape from The Horrors of having just left Silent Hill behind. I thought about the fact that Flygon has those red lenses and how they'd probably color his vision and how that could present an interesting challenge to play with. I also love the idea of Henry who is just Some Guy becoming a dragon--one of the most powerful Pokemon types. However, Flygon is not particularly strong on its own. It's a tall Pokemon though which I think fits Henry's lanky stature and he's more than happy to use his height to help others. Flygon is also a bit mysterious, its wings making a sound like singing as it hides in sandstorms. Henry is pretty well-known among the silent hill protagonists for hiding his emotions.

the wiki is not great

Personality:

He's a man of big emotions. When he's excited about something, he wants to get the whole town involved, complete with power point presentation on why. When he's sad, he is utterly lost in his melancholy and allows himself to fall into trouble like the time he got so sad he just walked out of town into the woods in a random direction until the sun came up. When he's focused on something, forgets to eat and sleep until he's puzzled out what he's trying to discover. Others often have to step in to bring Jack down to earth. He loves to play as much as anyone and loves a spectacle.

If something catches Jack's curiosity, he will pursue it until he feels he fully understands it. This can manifest in many ways: exploration, book study, the scientific method. He's only got a limited scope of understanding though. Jack knows ghosts and ghouls and graveyards and screams. Horrible is wonderful! Scary is spectacular! He was hand-trained by the previous Pumpkin King, Edgar, and taught all he knows about making sure Halloween goes the way it ought to. While he is not part of the governing body of the town, he is still a leader. The townspeople look at him for inspiration. It's a lot to carry on your shoulders, but it's something Jack does with dignity and pride.

His attention span does have a threshold though. He managed to get tired of Halloween, but only after being Pumpkin King for a LONG ASS TIME. Maybe it was a midafterlife crisis. Either way, he did his whole diving into Christmas thing because it was something that wasn't Halloween. I'm sure if he'd ended up in one of the other holiday realms, the same thing would have happened. In this canon update he has regained his love for Halloween once again, but he still has a healthy interest in new ideas.

Although he delights in scaring the masses, as being scary is very important in Halloween Town, Jack is above all a polite and decent fellow. He treats every citizen of Halloween Town as his equal and appreciates all their talents and gifts. His friends are his whole world. When Zero went missing due to his careless placement of one of his inventions, he did not rest until his dog was back in his arms. He enlisted the strongest and bravest monsters to be part of the rescue team. When he saw that his dear friend Sally, who had supported him even in his wildest antics, was being held against her will and tortured, he saw red. His loyalty threw him into action and he did battle with Oogie Boogie until not a bug was left. This is important because Oogie and Jack have a history. He must have already fallen pretty darn far in Jack's eyes. Sometimes you have to kill your childhood best friend. :(

Jack is very hands-on when talking to people, patting shoulders and tugging people in the direction of whatever he's talking about. If he thinks your tongue is important to the conversation, he just might pull it out of your mouth. He's a bit scattered though and does have a tendency to talk over people without meaning to, often missing things that are right in front of him, such as Sally's affection for him or Santa not into being sent on "vacation" via kidnapping in a plastic garbage bag. His intentions really are for the best, he just gets lost in his own whimsy. He can talk himself into anything. This thoughtlessness almost ruined Christmas entirely and since then, he's tried to be more thoughtful when it comes to other realms' customs. His friends won't let him forget, that's for sure.

Jack is very creative. For example, in the contest to become the new Pumpkin King in Training, Oogie sabotages him and makes him drop all his pumpkins. Thinking quickly, Jack pieces the smashed shells together into one big jack-o-lantern and wins points for his efforts. He's known to tinker and invent things on whims as flimsy as a dream (creating the magic mirror) or even pouring months of hard work into furthering the technology of the holiday realms (the portal in zero's journey). He admires Dr. Finklestein and often goes to him for advice on scientific matters.

He's just a little guy and he's out here and he loves the world and scaring people.

PROSE SAMPLE:

Dust danced in the shafts of golden light streaming through the open door. Jack's shadow stretched across the floor and up the far wall as he and Edgar took their first steps back into Skellington Haus after what must have been almost ten years. The furniture loomed in the corners, covered in great white sheets making them look like ghosts. It made Jack smile.

"Home at last, Edgar," he said.

Jack flipped on the lights and crossed the living room to uncover the vintage black velvet sofa. He made short work of folding the old sheet, pausing only to sneeze. Edgar imitated him. He tossed the sheet onto a nearby chair and sank down onto the dark cushions with a sigh. It had been quite the journey from Route 29, but he'd had to hit all the towns on foot if he wanted to reignite his warp passes. It was worth it. With the aid of the Poke'Gear and his Pokemon, he was never alone.

He pulled the device out of his coat pocket and flipped it on to see what everyone was up to today. Someone was challenging a gym. Someone was hiding from mall security. Someone was posting aesthetic photos of sleeping Pokemon. It was all so normal, and yet...

The Murkrow croaked and butted her head under Jack's chin. He stroked her feathers and smiled down at her, remembering what he had told Cali over the network. "I'm alright. It's a vacation! And who knows…something exciting could be just around the corner!"

Edgar flapped her wings and took off. She drifted through the air and landed on top of the tall crooked grandfather clock. There, she tapped forward and pecked at the glass covering the clock's face. The clock hadn't run in years.

"You're right, Edgar!" Jack stood up at once. "We've only got so much time until Halloween!"
